How to Size a Woodworking Central Dust Collection System

A buyer-focused guide for preparing machine lists, duct routes and working conditions before sizing a central dust collection system for a furniture or woodworking factory.

List the machines that operate at the same time

Sizing should not simply add every machine in the workshop. The simultaneous operation quantity is more important for fan selection, duct velocity and collector capacity.

Prepare outlet sizes and layout

Machine outlet diameter, distance to the dust collector, duct branches and ceiling height all affect pressure loss and system balance. A simple layout drawing is often enough for preliminary selection.

Consider dust load and safety direction

Wood chips, sanding dust and mixed woodworking dust have different pre-separation and filtration needs. Spark risk, antistatic filters and explosion venting direction should be reviewed during early design.

Plan spare parts from the beginning

Filter bags, filter cartridges, pulse valves, dust discharge parts and flexible ducts should be recorded with the system so future maintenance is easier.
